Born 1962 in Sydney, Kate Clark completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Sydney - on modern and baroque flutes - in 1985. In the same year she was a finalist in the Australian National Flute Competition and was guest principal flute with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
In 1986 she joined the baroque flute class of Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatorium in Den Haag where she completed her Soloist's Diploma "cum laude" in 1990. A fascination with the Renaissance flute led her to undertake a final period of study and research at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland under the guidance of the American flautist and musicologist Anne Smith. In 1993 she won the first Prize in the Brugge International Early Music Competition.
Since 1988 Kate Clark has performed and recorded as a soloist and with chamber ensembles and orchestras throughout Europe including Cantus Cölln, Das Freiburger Barock Orchester, Concerto Köln, Die Deutsche Handel Solisten, Das Reinische Kantorei and Les Musiciens du Louvre. As solo flute with Les Musiciens du Louvre from 1994-2006 she participated in their many recordings and appeared at Festivals throughout Europe and the United States. She makes regular appearences in Australia as soloist with The Australian Brandeburg Orchestra, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, or as artist in residence at the University of Western Australia..
She has made many chamber music recordings, notably with flautist Wilbert Hazelzet, lutenist Toyohiko Satoh, Gambist Kees Boeke,The Ensemble of the Classic Era, Musica Ad Rhenum, The Amphion Ensemble.
As a leading specialist on renaissance flute she has joined Cantus Cölln for several recordings of 17thc Geistliche Konzerte and is invited all over Europe to give lectures and courses on this instrument. In 1998 she founded the Attaignant Consort which specialises in 16thc repertoir for flute consort. The Attaignant Consort has given concerts in the Netherlands, Italy, Germany ansd Switzerland. Their first CD will be released on the RAMEE label in September 2007
Kate Clark gives lectures and courses in Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Israel and Australia. She teaches baroque and renaissance flutes at the Royal Conservatorium in Den Haag (since 1996). She lives in Amsterdam with her partner and two sons.
